You don’t need to be a smart home pro to set up the Google Nest Doorbell (Battery). That’s part of the appeal here: It’s wireless, it’s easy to install, and it does most of the heavy lifting for you. For $119.99 (down from $179.99), you get a doorbell that can tell the difference between a person, a package, a pet, and a passing car, so your phone won’t be buzzing every time the wind shakes the trees.

What helps the Nest Doorbell stand out is its sharp vertical field of view. It records at 960p with a 3:4 aspect ratio, which gives you a clear head-to-toe view of anyone at your door—helpful for spotting dropped-off deliveries or just checking in on things. Night vision is also solid up to about 10 feet, notes this PCMag review. It connects over both 2.4GHz and 5GHz wifi, and while it doesn’t support Alexa or Apple HomeKit, it does integrate neatly with Google Assistant and the Google Home app. Just a heads up: you’ll need the Google Home app and a Google account to get started. This model does not work with the Nest Hub.

There are some tradeoffs to keep in mind. The free cloud storage only lets you view the last three hours of footage, so if you need a longer video history, you’ll have to pay. Nest Aware plans start at $8/month and go up to $15/month if you want 60 days of history. On the upside, features like person, animal, vehicle, and package detection are included without a plan. And since it runs on a rechargeable battery, it keeps recording even during a wifi or power outage. It’s not the most feature-packed model out there, and it’s limited if you’re not already in the Google ecosystem. But for folks who want a smarter front door without a hardwired mess, this deal makes a solid case.
