What if you could have cheap, guilt-free ice cream every day? Let me introduce you to the Ninja Creami, my latest kitchen obsession.
Any fans of Halo Top know that, usually, low-cal ice cream can be a bit on the expensive side, and it often comes with major consequences in the bathroom later. The Ninja Creami, after the admittedly high-ish entry fee, fixes both of those problems.
While home ice-cream makers aren’t a new thing, the Creami is unique in how it works. Essentially, it’s a miniature Pacojet, an $8,000 piece of restaurant equipment that uses a specialized paddle to microshave pre-frozen ingredients into creams, soups, and sauces. The Creami, at 2% of the cost, does the same thing, but just for ice creams and other similar frozen desserts.
The results feel like magic; the Creami lets you do some truly wacky stuff. Sure, you can make regular, full-fat ice cream in this. Just pre-freeze your ingredients for 24 hours, then process them using one of the machine’s preset programs. But the magic of Creami’s approach is that, because it doesn’t churn over hours but rather microshaves over the course of a few minutes, you can get a bit more clever with your ingredients.
This is what’s made the gadget go viral on platforms like TikTok over the past few years. With as few ingredients as milk and flavored protein powder, you can make a pretty convincing imitation of, say, your typical store brand ice cream, but for much cheaper and with fewer calories. Throw in some zero sugar Jell-o packets and maybe a few extracts or mix-ins, and baby, you’ve got a Ben & Jerry’s-level stew going.
This has revolutionized how I make dessert, and even dinner. Now, I don’t need to feel so guilty when my sweet tooth starts acting up—a pint of Ninja Creami ice cream is essentially just a fancy glass of milk, and it feels better to have one than make a quick DoorDash for cake or cookies. And I can even plan around this—I can make my dinner portions smaller, and plan to supplement it with ice cream to round it out.
Plus, it’s just fun to watch it go: I’ve got recipes on my phone for chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream, cookies and cream ice cream, dulce de leche ice cream—I’ve found so many fun things I can do with it that I actually prefer the low-calorie ice creams I make with it than those I get from eating out.
It’s the biggest splurge item I’d recommend for any home kitchen, and I haven’t even gotten into using it to make other desserts, like boozy milkshakes or sherbet (which you can make just by dumping certain fruits directly from a can into a Creami pint). The only real downside is that you have to pre-freeze your Creami pints ahead of time, but if you always keep your freezer stocked up with a few flavors, it’s not a big deal.
Right now, you can get a Ninja Creami and two pints (yes, you do need special containers for this) at Walmart for $169, which is a small cut off the usual price of $199. It might not be the biggest savings, but if you have the type of sweet tooth I do, it’ll still pay for itself in no time.
