I recently stepped into the world of smart scales while researching how you can use your FSA/HSA funds to buy fitness trackers. I found that in particular, some Withings smart scales are marketed as medical devices, not just nifty wellness trackers. Because compared to stepping on any old scale, or using any old smartwatch, the promise of a smart scale is a detailed body composition analysis. In theory, you can use your breakdown of muscle mass, fat percentage, and other body metrics to tailor your exercise and nutrition strategies for faster results. Unfortunately, when it comes to what smart scales can actually tell you, the reality is a little disappointing.

Sifting through all the bells and whistles that most scales simply cannot deliver, the main reason to get a smart scale is simple: The ability sync your data with your health app of choice. If this sounds promising to you, good news: Right now the Withings Body Comp Smart Scale is on sale for $169.95, a 26% markdown from its usual $229.95.

This Withings scale is compatible with Health Connect, Apple Health, MyFitnessPal, Strava, and more. Instead of keeping a fitness tracker on your watch for all to see, you can have more private weigh-ins and gain all the same info: heart rate, body composition, bone mass, and, of course, your weight. And if you find that your readings are consistent enough to track over time, go right on ahead and have fun with them.

If you are a smart scale defender and want to use your FSA/HSA funds on one, the Withings Body Scan smart scale is also on sale, down to $349.95 (from $499.95). Allegedly what sets this option apart is the segmental body composition feature, which claims to locate muscle imbalances and excess fat in the arms, legs, and torso. Or, in a more tangible perk, this scale also has a rechargeable battery, whereas most options require AAA batteries.

On the flip side, if you want to play it safe with a simpler alternative, their Body Smart scale is down to $89.95.
