Like most people who have dogs, I’m rather partial to mine. He’s a Yorkie-Shih Tzu terrier mix who was born, well, spirited. He’s got a lot of spirit, even in his ninth year of life as the black spots on his fur turn grey. (His nickname used to be “Puppy,” but in the past year, I’ve taken to calling him “Old Man Puppy.” I think it’s more distinguished.)
A couple of years ago, Old Man Puppy’s naturally spirited nature gave way to something that had always lurked beneath the surface: generalized anxiety disorder (or so I assume). This anxiety presents itself in myriad ways, but one of the least pleasant ones is a tendency to pee on any carpet or rug available whenever I were to, say, leave him alone downstairs for four minutes. (I’m the worst!) This was wreaking havoc on my daily quality of life—until someone urged me to buy the Bissell Little Green carpet and upholstery cleaner. Since February 2024, Little Green and I have been through it together, and the suction and cleaning power on this machine have never let me down. I originally bought it for $100, but it’s on sale now for $81.99 for Prime Day, which I assure you is well worth it.

I use the recommended cleaner mixed with water at the recommended ratio (because I am a rule follower, and because it works). In addition, I always prepare a bowl of clean warm water for my Bissell to suck up at the end to help flush out the inner workings. When I say this thing has endured heavy use in the past year and a half, I mean it. Old Man Puppy isn’t getting any younger, after all.

While I primarily use this machine for pet messes and stains, I don’t only use it for that. I have two teenage sons, too, after all. Little Green is lightweight and easy to transport about the house via the comfortable handle on the top. And it has a long cord, which is key in my 100-year-old home that is high on charm and low on outlets. I find the whole unit is easy to clean besides the actual main brush tool itself; there is a plastic piece that should pop off, in my opinion, to more thoroughly clean it, but it doesn’t budge. So I usually run that part under hot water, throw it in the top rack of the dishwasher, and it’s ready for the next round of cleaning.
If you’ve got pets who ever aim bodily fluids at soft surfaces (it seems intentional, doesn’t it?), I highly recommend this cleaning machine. Or if you have kids, or messy house guests, or you’re just kind of a disaster yourself, you’ll get plenty of use out of this. I’ve got this model for $81.99, but you might also want to check out these options, depending on your space and needs:
A mini version that has half the tank capacity but would be easier to store ($69.99)
A cordless mini version ($119.99)
The Little Green Pet Pro, which is bigger and badder and ready for anything ($159.99)
