If you’re a DIY woodworker, you’re probably familiar with using a router to shape the edges of your work. While a router can be expensive, it’s a game-changing tool if you want to give your DIY projects a professional finish. This Milwaukee combo kit also comes with an impact driver—and it’s 46% off for Home Depot’s Labor Day Sale.

This set includes a Milwaukee 18-volt compact cordless router and a Milwaukee 18-volt impact driver. The router has a speed control dial to allow more or less torque depending on the material you’re using it with. Both tools have automatic LED lights that engage when you press their start button or trigger. This is a tool-only deal, so you’ll need a Milwaukee 18-volt battery and charger to use them.

The set is a good addition to an existing Milwaukee kit if you already have batteries, and if you want to upgrade from a drill alone to a drill and impact driver combo so you can drive hardware into tougher material and without switching bits in between. The router alone is usually $199.

Milwaukee’s cordless tools have developed a reputation among construction professionals for their reliability and battery life, and I’ve found that my Milwaukee set has been extremely durable. Most of my batteries have lasted more than 10 years, and the tools rarely need to be replaced.

Milwaukee’s cordless router performs as well as other corded compact routers in my experience, and not dragging a cord around is an added convenience.

Why you might need a router and impact driver

A router allows you to round over corners on woodworking projects, trim your edges so they’re flush, and cut decorative profiles into the edges of your wood to make trim. You can also use routers for plunge-cutting grooves into the surface of wood or to trace patterns.

An impact driver allows you to drive screws into tougher material like two-by-fours more easily and without as much pressure. You can also use your impact driver as a drill if you have a drill bit designed to fit the hex, ¼ inch chuck.

I use the compact router to trim corners when I’m building a frame that has a plywood top and I like it because it’s more portable than the corded version I use for heavy-duty projects. It’s easier to control the router and concentrate on keeping it level with the surface I’m working on when I’m not dragging a cord behind me.

I use my impact driver daily and I find that it’s easier on my wrists than some other brands that aren’t balanced as well; it’s more comfortable to handle when I’m working for several hours and driving lots of screws.
